If you don’t understand what happens if you neglect changing oil filters or air filters, this article is for you. Filters aren’t anything that you use until they give out. So you really don’t want to ask the question, “How many miles can an oil filter last?” Or “How many miles can an air filter last?” If you try to drive as many miles as you can without changing the filters, you may be asking for major engine trouble and high repair bills.

So why should you change the oil filter? It traps dirt, sludge, metal particles, and other impurities in your motor oil so that the oil is as clean and pure as possible. This allows the oil to do its best job of lubricating the inner parts of your engine. If the filter is dirty, damage to the internal parts of your engine can be taking place, increasing the engine operating temperature because of lack of lubrication and increased friction, thereby shortening the life of your engine.

What about air filters? Clean air filters prevent small particles from entering the engine and causing potentially expensive damage. There are several other benefits to replacing air filters on a regular basis, such as:

  1. Increases Fuel Efficiency. A dirty or damaged air filter limits the airflow into your car’s engine, making it work harder and, therefore, using more fuel.
  2. Reduces Emissions. Your vehicle’s air-fuel balance is thrown off if air filters are dirty or damaged, reduce the airflow to the engine. This can pollute spark plugs, cause the engine to miss or idle rough; increase engine depositions; increase toxic exhaust fumes, and cause the ‘Service Engine’ light to turn on.
  3. Prolongs Engine Life. A clean air filter is designed to capture dirt and debris from the outside air, preventing them from reaching the combustion chamber and causing damage to internal engine parts, such as cylinders and pistons.

So how many miles can air filters last? It is recommended that you replace air filters at least every 12,000-15,000 miles. This will help maintain the highest possible performance of your car. If you consistently drive in dusty and dirty conditions, this interval should be quite a bit less.

Remember: Replacing filters is cheap insurance. While changing these filters frequently will cost you more money upfront, it can save you from a potentially large engine repair bill.
