Puleo's Auto Clinic

It may be confusing about how often do you really need oil changes for your vehicle. Because of new technological advancements in vehicles plus new types of oil products, there is conflicting information about the oil change interval. Where can you find the answer? Start with your owner’s manual to find out what your vehicle manufacturer recommends for your specific vehicle.

Here are answers to three common questions about oil changes:

  1. How do you know when it’s time to change the oil? Many of today’s newer vehicles have a service reminder to alert drivers when to change the oil. This system monitors the number of miles that have been driven and also senses how the car was driven.
  2. Do you need to check the oil level? To make sure you’re not driving with low oil, check the level about once a month. You may need to add a little oil between oil changes. Get even a small leak repaired as soon as possible. Your mechanic will check the color of the oil (it should be brown) and will also look for metal particles in the oil, an indication of engine damage.
  3. How often do you really need oil changes? This can be confusing as some mechanics still adhere to the “every 3,000 miles or every 3 months” rule. But with the advancement in engines and oil, many auto manufacturers now recommend oil-change intervals between 7,500 or even 10,000 miles (or six to 12 months).
  4. What kind of oil should you use? You may find the weight of the recommended oil is printed on the cap where you add oil. Or read your owner’s manual so you know what the manufacturer recommends.

So how often do you really need oil changes? Contact our ASE Certified Technicians at Puleo’s Auto Clinic to ask about our oil change coupons and to schedule an oil change service. Our auto shop serves vehicle owners in Washington, NJ, and the surrounding areas.
