Puleo's Auto Clinic

The subject of filters for your vehicles, such as oil filters, air filters, and fuel filters, seems to be rarely discussed. Most often, they are “out of sight, out of mind.” If you drive in harsh road and weather conditions or have an aggressive driving style, you probably find yourself visiting your auto shop fairly frequently for other car issues. This is a good time to ask them to inspect the air filter and any other filter as well.

So how often should oil filters be changed? Typically, the oil filter should be replaced at least about every other oil change for normal driving conditions. However, replacing the oil but not the filter is a wasted expense. Clean oil traveling through the old filter will come out looking like old oil. A clean oil filter extends the life of the engine and keeps the oil clean.

What about air filters? You should change the air filter at least once a year or every 12,000-15,000 miles. If you drive in dusty and dirty conditions, you may be required to change your filter more often. Air filters trap dirt, dust, and other particles and keep them from getting into your engine. A clean air filter enhances the air quality in the cabin, and improves performance and fuel economy.

What about fuel filters? Essential for optimum engine performance, the fuel filter holds out the impurities before they enter the engine. It can become clogged over time with dirt, debris, and other particulates within the gas and need to be replaced.

Because the engine has to work harder in extreme temperatures and harsh road conditions, it may be necessary for more frequent to replace filters more often. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the definition of severe driving conditions.

Good News! The cost for oil filters, air filters, and fuel filters is relatively inexpensive—much cheaper than the cost of major engine repair due to lack of maintenance.
